Beat the Heat Naturally: Ayurvedic Summer Regimen for Kids

☀️ Summer is Here!!!☀️

It’s the season of sunshine, holidays, and plenty of outdoor fun for children! But as parents, it’s natural to be concerned about your child’s health and well-being during this time—especially in the face of rising temperatures and dry winds.

Ayurveda, the ancient science of life, offers detailed guidance on diet and lifestyle during the summer (Grishma Ritu), helping us care for our children naturally and holistically.

🌿 Ayurvedic Diet Recommendations for Summer

In summer, the digestive fire becomes weaker and dehydration is common. Ayurveda recommends foods that are:

Easily digestible
Sweet and cooling in potency
Liquid or semi-liquid in consistency

🥗 Recommended Foods:

  • Grains: Soft-cooked Rice and Wheat

  • Dairy: Cow’s Milk, Buffalo Milk with Rock Sugar, Ghee, Buttermilk

  • Fresh Juices: From Grapes, Dates, Pomegranate, and seasonal fruits like Mango and Jackfruit

🥤 Special Preparations:

  • Panaka (Cooling Drink): Mix cold water (preferably from a new earthen pot) with rock sugar, cardamom (Ela), clove, edible camphor, and a pinch of black pepper. This is a great energizer and rehydrator.

  • Rasala: Blend curd or buttermilk with rock sugar and black pepper. A tasty and cooling probiotic option!

  • Saktu Ganji: Dry roast dehusked grains (like rice), powder them, and cook as thin gruel. Season with salt and cumin or sweeten with rock sugar. Nutritious and easy on the stomach.

  • Mamsa Rasa (Meat Soup): For non-vegetarian families, a mild meat soup prepared with ginger, pippali, salt, and coriander can be nourishing.

👚 Lifestyle Tips for Summer:

  • Dress in lightweight, white, and breathable fabrics

  • Avoid going outdoors in the peak heat (12 PM–4 PM)

  • Allow children to rest for 45 minutes to 1 hour in the afternoon

  • Encourage hydration. Especially the water kept in earthen pots.

❌ Foods & Habits to Avoid:

  • Excessive intake of salty, sour, spicy, hot, or fermented foods

  • Carbonated drinks and deep-fried snacks

  • Refrigerated foods and beverages. Ice-creams, cool drinks etc

  • Overexposure to sun and excessive outdoor play during peak hour

🌧️ Seasonal Preparation – From Summer to Rainy Season:

As summer ends and the monsoon approaches, children may be vulnerable to imbalances and seasonal illnesses.
Ayurveda recommends Mridu Abhyanga (gentle oil massage) followed by a warm water bath to balance doshas and strengthen immunity. This simple routine can be a part of your child’s preventive health care.
